What Is the Biofield?
For thousands of years, healing traditions around the world have described an organizing field of energy that surrounds and interpenetrates the human body. Although these traditions use different language—from qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine to prana in Ayurveda—they share the idea that health depends on the dynamic flow and balance of this subtle system.
In recent decades, scientists have begun exploring whether modern biology may offer new ways of understanding these ancient observations. The term biofield has emerged as a scientific framework describing the complex network of electrical, magnetic, electromagnetic, and possibly other informational processes that help regulate living systems. Rather than referring to a single measurable force, the biofield is increasingly viewed as a dynamic system through which cells, tissues, and organs communicate and coordinate.
Researchers are investigating how biofield therapies may influence pain, stress, anxiety, wound healing, and overall well-being. While many questions remain unanswered, advances in systems biology, biophysics, and complexity science are opening new avenues for studying how the body organizes itself and responds to healing.
The biofield remains an evolving area of research, but it represents one of the most intriguing frontiers in understanding health beyond purely biochemical explanations.
